Organization's profile


"Center for Independent Journalism" (CIJ) Foundation, Sofia, is a non-governmental, non-profit organization, which unites expert potential with practical experience in the field of journalism and media. CIJ's founders are university professors, young journalists and students at the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at "St. Kliment Ohridski", Sofia University.
CIJ-Sofia was founded in 1996.

Goals


CIJ is united around the basic value and aspiration of establishing Bulgarian journalism's role for the development of civil society and journalism's approximation the standards of the advanced democratics societies.

The main goals are as follows:


• To defend freedom of speech and to work for its real social guarantees.

• To contribute for increasing the role of media and journalism in civil society development.

• To contribute young journalists' emancipation and to help forming professional self-consciousness adequate for a democratic society.

• To promote ethics and tolerance as basic journalistic values.

• To work for the professionalization of the media.

• To promote active and critical public attitude towards the media.


Programs and Activities

CIJ's structure is composed by:

• practically oriented research program - media monitoring and media research;

• training program;

• publishing program;

• consulting unit to defend freedom of speech against violations.

Main CIJ's activities are as follows:

• realization of practice and training oriented research activity;
permanent media monitoring;

• organization of training courses, seminars, workshops, discussions with the participation of young journalists from nationwide and regional media;

• establishment and development of data-base and documentation in the field of media in the democratic countries;

• establishment of documentation of mechanisms of freedom of the speech guarantees;

• data-base establishment of ethic codes and ethical practices in the sphere of professional journalism ethics;

• publishing of books and booklets with selected texts from prominent West-European and American media experts, researchers and journalists as well as publishing of booklets and books on the basis of the CIJ's research work, seminars and discusions;


CIJ is among the organizations-founders of the Bulgarian Media Coalition (BMC).
CIJ is among the founders of the South-East European Network for Professionalisation of the Media (SEENPM).

- Active Civic Attitude towards Media: effective media work with the citizens' feedback information - 2000-2001 (supported by Open Society Fund);

- Media monitoring "NGOs and Media" - 2001 (in the framework of the project "Professionalization of the Relationships NGOs-Media", carried out by BMC under the USAID Democracy Network Program);

- Strategies for Roma Media Development - 2003 (supported by NCEDI and World Bank for Reconstruction and Development);

- Professional Definitions in Broadcasting - 2002-2003 (supported by IREX/ProMedia under Stability Pact).

Center for Independent Journalism in accordance with Non-Profit Legal Entities Act offers following services:

• Seminars and training courses on effective work with media.

• Research projects in media field upon theme claimed by the client.

• Consultancy and expert assessments in the field of media and journalism.

• Media monitoring and media strategies for interrested organizations.

• Analyses of public image of organizations politicians, businessmen and differentiated strategies for public image improving.

CIJ's experts can also realize other services besides the above mentioned depending on the requirements of the clients and in accordance with CIJ's Charter and Non-Profit Legal Entities Act.
